- Justin Bieber says Instagram is “for the devil”
- Ed Sheeran left all social media platforms a year ago and has not yet returned
- Zayn Malik tried to leave but returned two days later for his fans
Everybody knows that social media can be toxic. Sometimes it feels like you are a voyer to people that you don’t even know. Just scrolling through your feed and being a passive user sums up the experience for a lot of people.
Maybe your one of those people who watch celebirites or friends flaunt their life while your pales in comparison. Or you might be going through a really dificult time and all you see is people living it up. They are having a ball partying. They look amazing. They have stylish clothes. Sure social media platforms are useful but is social media all it is cracked up to be?
What we see is the best bits people have to offer. But not the worst. No one wants to put up the bad stuff just everything that is good. And there is nothing wrong with that. But is that healthy being exposed to it all the time?
Some celebtiries took the option of closing their social media as a result of abuse online. Like Justin Bieber who decided to take a break from social media in August after he admitted on stage that Instagram is “the devil”.
He likened social media to being in “hell”. Justin is no stranger to controversey having recently puched a fan. But his most recent comments are interesting “Instagram is for the devil. I think Hell is Instagram. I’m like 90 percent sure.” He added that “We get sent to hell and we get locked in the Instagram server. I’m stuck in the DMs. I’m trying to climb my way out and I can’t.”
It all started when he introduced his new girlfriend Sofia Richie online. A lot of his fans were upset by the news. “I’m gonna make my Instagram private if you guys don’t stop the hate this is getting out of hand, if you guys are really fans you wouldn’t be so mean to people that I like.”
Selena Gomez didn’t help matters when she caused a rucus by weighing in by giving her own opinion. “If you can’t handle the hate then stop posting pictures of your girlfriend lol -it should be special between you two only.”
Selena went further by saying “Don’t be mad at your fans. They love you. They were there for you before anyone.”
Ed Sheeren called it quits on social media when he revealed on Facebook that he would be “Taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while.”
He opened up about his move ”I’ve had such an amazing ride over the last five years but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes so i’m taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed.”
Ed Sheeren has not broken his promise he has not posted anything on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram since than.
Zayn Malik wanted to escape social media after he was fed up being trolled online in 2012. The 19 year old tweeted “The reason I don’t tweet as much as i use to, is because I’m sick of all the useless opinions and hate that i get daily goodbye twitter 🙂
He said further “My fans that have something nice to say can tweet me on the one direction account , 🙂 x” But Zayn couldn’t stay away from the online world when he returned two days later saying “Sorry, I was getting some abuse on twitter but I don’t want to let my fans down. So I am back!! 🙂 x”.
So what’s the answer? There are digital detox retreats around the world you can attend to get away from technology.
Have your say and tell me what you think about a digital detox? Would you be willing to part with social media? Do you think Justin Bieber is over reacting and should return to social media?
