This blog post has been inspired by the news that singer Zayn Malik recently had to pull out of a concert gig from what he described as “anxiety.” What he posted online is this, “To all those people who have been waiting to see me perform at the Capital Summertime Ball today.” “I flew into the UK last night to appear in my home country in front of my family, friends, and most importantly my UK fans.”
He continues, “Unfortunately my anxiety that has haunted me throughout the last few months around live performances has gotten the better of me … with the magnitude of the event, I have suffered the worst anxiety of my career.” “I cannot apologise enough but I want to be honest with everyone who has patiently waited to see me, I promise I will do my best to make this up to everybody I’ve let down today. I know those who suffer anxiety will understand and I hope those who don’t can empathise with my situation.”
When I was younger I had a lot of anxiety. My earlier years I was plagued by fear especially when I was competing. It is why I pursued a spiritual path in the first place to help with my own anxiety. It sounds like what Zayn is describing, well it could be stage fright but we can’t confirm this. Anyway for humans there is something called the flight or fight response. In the primitive years where there would have been a lot of predators and if you were in a dangerous situation the flight or fight response kicked in.
Basically your adrenlin would be pumping. And if you were about to be attacked you would stay and defend (fight) or run and hide (flight). This still applies to modern times. It is a built in human response. Now fear can be a good thing. Basically if we didn’t have a certain amount of fear we would all be putting ourselves in dangerous situations. Because fear has a job and that is actually it is there to protect us. But when fear is out of control and interefring with your life and daily routines that is when it is not serving you. I think there are three types of fear one where it is subtle but can be generally overcome like the book says “Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway”. Two a phobia that people have like a fear of snakes or spiders. Number three where the fear is powerful enough to manifest as physical symptoms or be long lasting. This kind of fear needs to be treated.
If you are experiencing problems with anxiety the first thing to do is a go to your doctor and explain what is going on. Do not suffer alone or in silence that is paramount. Because when fear is out of control it can run your life for you. I know it can be exhausting and irrational because I have experienced it myself. And as much as you reason with it you are wasting your time. So you should go to a health professional or tell a family member or friend, someone you can depend on. Whatever you do don’t let your fears hold you back. Once you have spoken about it with a loved one and gone to a health professional. And if you are still having problems you can go the alternative route. Have a read below for more.
There is EFT also known as Emotional Freedom Technique. This is an interesting system where your body has a number of different acupuncture points. They are meridian centres and you are literally using your fingers and tapping on these points that are located around the body in order to provide relief. And all the different areas of the body relate to different issues. So you are basically tapping away your problems.
Hypnosis can be really good for getting to the source of an issue. Hypnosis is when you are hypnotised and using visualisation and relaxtion techniques you are put into a depper state of consciousness. If you go to a hypnotherapist they will usually give you a tape that you listen to regularly and the unconscious is programmed to achieve a desired result like in the case of anxiety it would be to promote calmness.
NLP or neuro linguistic programming. It means neurology, language and programming. It programmes your mind using different techniques and is good for addressing bad habits and phobias including a range of other problems. Richard Bandler would have been one of the creators of NLP.
Please make sure if you are using any of the systems discussed or going to a practitoner that you go to a qualified professional that is certified to work with you. There is a lot of information, books and resources on the internet regarding these areas. But please take a moment to read the disclaimer I have put below.
